Native Plant Sale & Water Conservation Event
Last Update: Mar 02, 2010

Mark Your Calendars!  March 20th from 9:00 to 4:00 pm, the City will hold a Water Conservation event entitled "Using Every Drop."

Indigenous plants will be sold in the Bradenton Beach City Hall Parking Lot starting at 9:00 am; only Anna Maria Island indigenous plants will be offered.  This is a great oppurtunity to get those hard-to-find low-resource plants perfectly suited for island yards.  At 2:00, a wonderful water conservation class will be held at the West Manatee Volunteer Fire Auxiliary building (behind Tingley Library) at the corner of 2nd Street N. and Highland Ave.  For $15.00 you will receive a 55-gallon rain barrel, with all of the fixtures, an A/C condensate drip hose, a garden hose repair kit, and many more water saving devices.  Sign up today by calling 941-778-4619.

Pet Waste Education and Eradication Project
Last Update: Jun 26, 2009

The City of Bradenton Beach, via its advisory committee Scenic Waves, has installed ten (10) pet waste stations in various locations along the bayfront and adjacent lands.  Each station is visible in the right-of-way with signage and a "biobag" dispenser.  The free-to-the-public biodegradable bags are meant to encourage responsibility among pet owners.  An associated education campaign has begun with door hangers and media ads.

With a grant generously supplied by the Sarasota Bay Estuary Program (http://www.sarasotabay.org/), the SCENIC WAVES Partnership Committee is ready to implement its project to eradicate pet waste from our city's land and waters.

If not handled properly, pet waste can be a source of illness for other animals or for humans. Pets and children who play in areas where animals defecate are most at risk for infection from disease-causing bacteria and parasites found in pet waste.

Here are the facts:

1Pet waste is not just a nuisance - Contaminates found in pet waste can cause several illnesses in humans including infection by parasitic worms, salmonellosis, giardiasis, Q Fever, and Campylobacter Infection.

2Pet waste does not decompose harmlessly into the soil - When pet waste is left in the yard to disintegrate, the soil becomes contaminated with bacteria, viruses and parasitic worm larva.

This soil can remain infectious for up to 10 years and there is no practical way to remove these contaminates from the soil once contamination has occurred. Young children and gardeners can be exposed to germs and parasitic worms from dirty hands or from eating unwashed fruits and vegetables.

3Pet waste is not good for the soil or watershed – It kills your grass leaving unsightly brown spots, it contaminates our waterways and it kills fish and plant life.

Because We All Live Downstream

**NOTE: Stop mummifying your dog's poop in plastic bags that don't biodegrade and use a compostable biodegradable BioBag that will compost in a matter of days.  Unlike imitation polyethylene plastic bags that "degrade" into small pieces of plastic, BioBags completely biodegrade into rich compost.  These dog waste poop bags are certified by the Biodegradable Products Institute, meet ASTM standards and are made from renewable resources.  Now there's truly no reason to be using plastic!

"Visioning" is the process of redefining the goals and directions of the City's Comprehensive Plan

The Visioning Committee tackled the difficult task of  implementing the Visioning Statement produced by the community in 2003 and adopted by the City Commission in 2005, by updating the City's Comprehensive Plan AND producing the Evaluation and Appraisal Report required by State law .

The City's Vision Plan can be viewed here.

Regina Wreck Underwater Preserve
Last Update: Jan 26, 2008

We have established a state Underwater Archaeological Preserve at the submerged site of Regina, the remains of a tanker barge sunk off Bradenton Beach, now the tenth shipwreck park in Florida.

The application was submitted in 2001 to the Florida Heritage Commission and was approved in 2003. The site's designation became effective April 30th, 2005 and an official plaque was sunk in place.

Regina was a converted tanker barge that sank in a storm with a cargo of molasses off Bradenton Beach in 1940. As an easily accessible historic shipwreck, Regina met all the criteria to become an excellent addition to Florida's Underwater Archaeological Preserve system.

The Regina Underwater Preserve project was spearheaded by Pete and Lorraine Athas, the owners of the SeaTrek Dive Shop located right across the street from the dive site

The Norman Family Bell
Last Update: Jan 26, 2008

"In many small towns you can hear bells ring on the hour from either churches or town squares.  While sitting in the Bridge Tender Inn having lunch one day, I thought a bell would sound sweet in the city tower by the pier.

I searched the web and found America's oldest bell maker, McShane Bell Foundry in Glen Burnie, Maryland.  The city gave me the OK to donate the bell and after 6 months in the making we placed it up in the tower.  Now you can hear the rest of the story from 8am to 8pm."
