Intergenerational Community Garden
Last Update: Mar 02, 2010
Generously funded by a State of Florida Dept. of Elder Affairs "Communities for a Lifetime" mini-grant and the Sarasota Bay Estuary Program, an ambitious redevelopment of Annie Silver Community Center is in the planning/approval stages.
Designed by Allen Garner (land planner/landscape architect), the current design includes a rain catchment and irrigation system, eight "salad tables," and indigenous landscaping.
This project will be completely run by volunteers and managed via the City of Bradenton Beach.
Anna Maria Elementary School Environmental Education
Last Update: Apr 14, 2010
The City of Bradenton Beach has a valued partnership with Anna Maria Elementary School in environmental education. As partners, we are in receipt of acknowledgement of a Gulf of Mexico Alliance grant to enhance that program. This exciting award of $7,103.00 will enable our future stewards to study such topics as "dune movement," classifying plant types, ecosystem ingredients and animal adaptations. Environmental professionals will be engaged to present the topics, thereby removing the onus from faculty.
An April 21, 2010, kick-off activity will be held at Anna Maria Elementary Science Night from 5:00 - 7:00 pm, as Reef Innovations leads us through a reef ball-building experience.
Communities for a Lifetime
Last Update: May 06, 2009
The City of Bradenton Beach made a committment in 2008 to declare itself part of the "Communities for a Lifetime," which is administered by the Florida Dept. of Elder Affairs. This committment entails making Bradenton Beach friendly for "aging in place."
Issues of "livability" include: Housing, Transportation, Employment, Health and Wellness, Volunteerism, and Intergenerational Programs.
